Message from Chad Leith: June 19, 2020

Dear Morse School Families,

Good morning and Happy Juneteenth

It has been an extraordinary 14 weeks since we made the hasty transition from in-person schooling to distance learning, and I want to dedicate a portion of this end-of-year message to acknowledging the incredible flexibility, creativity, and collaboration that you have contributed to keeping our children learning and growing in the face of unprecedented circumstances. We have all needed to learn new things and rely on one another in new ways. While we were never able to approximate a typical classroom experience, we were able to maintain strong and positive connections and have ended the school year with our sense of community intact. Thank you for your partnership through the ups and downs of this unusual school year!

Of course, there are many lessons we have learned through this experience, and we will be carefully considering the reflections and suggestions of parents and teachers as we look ahead to September, when we are likely to maintain some level of online learning (even if we are able to partially reopen our school building). Earlier in the week, Superintendent Salim offered an end-of-year message in which he shared links for helpful resources, including information on summer learning opportunities and the summer food program. In his message, he also acknowledged that there are many unanswered questions about what things will look like when we return to school. Please know that I will continue to communicate with Morse School families and staff members throughout the summer to keep you up to date on fall planning.

JunteenthIn the meantime, I want to wish you and your children all the best for a wonderful start to the summer vacation. There are several Juneteenth commemorations taking place today, including a 10AM flag raising this morning at City Hall and a 2:30PM procession from Central Square to the Main Cambridge Public Library, where there will be outdoor art, mindfulness activities, a DJ, and a book drive (see flyer to left). There will also be a 4PM March for Black Lives on the Cambridge Common.

Also, Sunday is Father’s Day, and I want to share a special appreciation for our amazing Morse School dads!

To all of our students, families, and staff members, thank you for being a member of the Morse School community.

Sincerely,

Principal Chad Leith
