Message from Chad Leith: December 6, 2019

Dear Members of the Morse School Community,

It has been an eventful week for students at the Morse School, as we saw our first “snow day” of the year on Tuesday and sent two of our grade-level cohorts off on enriching field trips on Thursday. Our Junior Kindergarteners and Kindergarteners, who have been reading works by author and illustrator Mo Willems during their library and in-class literacy blocks, enjoyed the Wheelock Family Theater’s production of Elephant & Piggie’s We Are In A Play. Meanwhile, our 3rd graders were visiting Yayoi Kusama’s sold-out special exhibit Love is Calling at the Institute of Contemporary Art, where they had a chance to enter one of Kusama’s famous “infinity mirror rooms.” Their visit (artistically rendered below in a photo by 3rd grade parent Christopher Edelman) follows a two-month exploration of Kusama’s work in Ms. Kerr’s art class.

Main Entrance Work Complete!
Final work on our main entrance is complete, which means that are back to “business as usual” with the use of the front doors by our Main Office. Thank you once again to all children, parents, and staff members for your flexibility while the contractors have completed their work.

Parent/Teacher Conferences
As a reminder, 1st Trimester parent/teacher conferences for students in grades 1-5 will take place next Wednesday, December 11th. Parent/teacher conferences provide an important opportunity for parents and teachers to discuss students’ academic progress and social development. During your child’s conference, you will receive your child’s report card and have an opportunity to view some of the work your child has completed during the first three months of school. If you have not received a conference sign-up form in your child’s backpack, please contact your child’s teacher or call the Main Office (617-349-6575).

Before-School Activities Update
It has been wonderful to see so many children taking advantage of our awesome before-school activities! Our Physical Education teacher Mr. Fousek would like to share with families that Tuesday Morning Sports Program will be transitioning from Soccer to Basketball. If you are interested in having your 3rd-5th grade student participate in Tuesday morning basketball, please complete the attached form and have your child give it to Mr. F in the gym. The Morse Morning Singers and Morse Computer Science Club will continue on Wednesday and Thursday mornings, respectively, as will Ms. Pennell’s morning storytime for children and parents/caregivers (all ages, drop in - no sign-up required!).

Save the Date!
Principal’s Coffee - Thursday, December 19th (8:30-9:15)
Please come join me on December 19th for coffee (or hot cider!) in the Morse School library. There is no formal agenda. Rather, I look forward to meeting parents and hearing what is on your mind as we wrap up 2019. If you are unable to make it, please know that you can always reach me by email or by setting up a face-to-face meeting through Elaine in the main office. I will also be available to meet during parent/teacher conferences next Wednesday.

Finally, a reminder that this evening the Friends of Morse will host its first Family Movie Night of the school year! Pizza, drinks, and snacks will go on sale beginning at 6:00pm; Movie starts at 6:30pm. Movie night is a fun way to enjoy an evening out with other Morse School families. Admission is only $1! Please be reminded that for the safety and viewing pleasure of all audience members, children must be accompanied by an adult during the entire event.

My best wishes for a wonderful December weekend!

Sincerely,

Chad Leith
Principal
