Message from Chad Leith: May 4, 2021

Dear Morse School Parents & Caregivers,

Teachers WeekThis is Educator Appreciation Week, and I would like to invite all of us to take a moment to celebrate our Morse School teachers, paraprofessionals, specialists, and staff members for the tremendous work that they have done to create safe and nurturing learning spaces for our students during this challenging year. The pandemic has only underscored the critical role that our educators play in our children’s positive growth and development. Thanks, also, to the Friends of Morse and our Familia Umoja Caregivers of Color Affinity Group for organizing a week of thoughtful acknowledgements for both our in-person and remote staff, including festive banners, coffee, cookies, lunch, and other special treats! These gifts have been very much appreciated by all members of our staff!

Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month
May is Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month, and we are taking the opportunity as a school community to engage in developing our awareness around the experiences, voices, and stories of AAPI in the United States and acknowledging that these stories have been largely excluded from the telling of American history. As a step towards equipping ourselves to responsibly bring AAPI Heritage Month into our learning spaces, Morse School staff together watched the first episode of the PBS series Asian Americans at our professional development meeting last Wednesday. Staff have also had the opportunity to review resources that we hope will allow us to more confidently and intentionally lift up AAPI histories, accomplishments, voices, and experiences at the Morse School.

School Council Meeting - Thursday May 6th
The next meeting of the Morse School Council will take place this Thursday, May 6th from 6 - 7:30PM. At this month’s meeting, we will be joined by Cambridge Public Schools Title I Coordinator Mary Grassi, who will offer an overview of the family engagement requirements for Title I schools like the Morse. School Council members will also consider steps we might take to strengthen family engagement over the coming school year. All members of the Morse School community are welcome to attend. To register for the meeting, please follow this link. You will receive a zoom link on Thursday afternoon. To learn more about the Morse School Council, please visit the School Council page on our school website.

May Materials Pickup for Remote Learners
Finally, a reminder that this is materials pickup week for our remote families. Please be sure to stop by any day this week between 7:30AM - 3PM to pick up your child’s library books and any other materials and supplies that your child’s teachers have set aside to support his/her/their learning over the coming weeks.

Finally, a reminder that we have many events planned for the month of May, including the Morse Marathon on May 20th and our Virtual Family Paint Night on May 21st! If you missed the Morse School May 2021 School Calendar in the message that Ms. Sullivan sent out on Friday 4/30, you can access it here!

As always, we are grateful for your partnership and collaboration. I wish you all the best for a great first week of May!

Sincerely,
Principal Chad Leith
