My 1st – 5th grade English learners have been working on improving their writing skills. I wanted to share an exciting project students will be doing for the holiday season. I have been collecting old holiday, birthday, and other cards (thank you to all who graciously donated cards to be recycled for this cause).

Students have begun to develop story ideas from the pictures on these cards. Each student chose a card to inspire them to write a story. Second through fifth graders have been working on developing a story from a story map, and will use this model to write their greeting card story. They have been learning how to “dress up” their writing using the five senses. This week (week of Dec. 8th), 1st graders also chose cards, and they are working on how to write a story with a good beginning, middle, and end.

We will be displaying the cards and stories on the bulletin board near the gymnasium. These are busy times, but look for some of these stories on the bulletin board before the December break.
