Message from Chad Leith: February 2, 2023

Dear Morse Parents and Caregivers,

I’d like to begin this week’s newsletter with a reminder and warm invitation to come enjoy tomorrow’s Winter Concert! The concert will take place in three shifts:

  • JK/K at 9AM
  • Grades 1 & 2 at 9:30AM
  • Grades 3, 4 & 5 at 10AM

You are invited to attend any portion of the concert. Auditorium doors open for family members at 8:45AM (please have your child come at their regular arrival time!).

Kicking off Black History Month with CPD Commissioner Elow
Black History MonthThis month, we will be using our weekly Morse Live Stream broadcast as a platform for highlighting African, African American, and Afro-Caribbean stories, contributions, experiences, and voices. This week’s broadcast will feature an interview with Cambridge Police Commissioner Christine Elow, the first black woman to lead the Cambridge Police Department! Commissioner Elow grew up in Cambridge and attended the Morse School as a child! She returned to her alma mater yesterday to participate in a special interview prepared by some of our amazing 5th graders. If you are looking to bring Black History Month into your home, please check out Reading Rockets’ Celebrating and Learning About Black History and Culture, which offers a great list of resources and suggestions.

Preparing for Tomorrow’s Cold Weather
The Winter Concert is well-timed, as we are expecting very cold weather to enter the region tomorrow. We will be keeping an eye on the thermometer, and in accordance with our existing policy, we will only allow children to play outside during recess if the “real feel” temperature is 20°F (-7 °C) or higher. However, the temperatures may be even colder by tomorrow afternoon’s dismissal time. For this reason, it is very important that you send your child to school dressed appropriately for the weather (e.g. a warm coat, winter hat, and gloves/mittens). If you are in need of winter clothing, please contact our Family Liaison Amy Diaz at 617.349.6679.

Morse School Swag
If you are looking to show your Morse School pride, we have teamed up with Custom Ink to offer a range of Morse School gear in multiple styles and sizes. We have added fleece gear with embroidery. We have worked with the company to keep costs down, and any proceeds will go towards Morse School programming. Please click here to see the Winter 2023 Morse swag!

Stay warm and I hope to see many of you at tomorrow’s Winter Concert!

Sincerely,

Principal Chad Leith
