Dear Morse School Students and Families,
This week we welcomed April and a little snow...yikes! It was a great week of learning as our grades 3-5 students get ready for MCAS which starts next week. In addition, our kindergarteners had visits from architects and our junior kindergarten & third graders learned about the solar eclipse with a presentation from Morse parent and scientist, Gábor Fûrész.
Upcoming Solar Eclipse
Courtesy of the Science Dept., we will share eclipse viewing glasses on Monday. The eclipse will take place from 2:16PM to 4:39PM, peaking at 3:29PM. We will have a fun celebration at school with a Solar Eclipse Dance Party from 2:00-2:15PM. Students are invited to wear black, white, or yellow in honor of the stars, moon, and sun. Kindergarten Architecture
In support of the FOK Unit 3, Construction, Polly Carpenter, the director of the Boston Society of Architects (BSA) helped connect local architects for Cambridge Public school visits.
Students had an opportunity to meet a real life architect that guided them in thinking about the construction process and how to make our city a better place; which also supports the “Our Cambridge” project.
On April 2nd, B-7 students had a wonderful time with local architect Hazel Ryerson. The workshop included a slideshow, discussion, and a hands on activity where students planned and created their own street in Cambridge. B-8 had a visit from Paul Herbert from Cambridge Seven who reinforced his job as an architect which includes all the things we do at school every day such as: arts, math and science to name a few. Paul then gave B-8 students shapes to make buildings such as: museums, schools, parks, buses, hospitals, fire stations and houses for their city. B-6 students will have an architect visit soon.
CPS Citywide Art Show
We are thrilled to share that fifteen of our students will have artwork featured at the CPS Young Artists JK-8 Exhibit being held at the Multicultural Arts Center. Artwork will be displayed from April 9th-25th with an opening reception on April 11th from 6-8PM. We hope you consider joining us to celebrate their work.
Saying Goodbye to Neph
With mixed emotions, we are saying goodbye to our Interim Senior Custodian, Neph Paul. He will be the permanent senior custodian at the Tobin School starting April 16th. We hoped he would be the permanent senior custodian at Morse but the timing and complexity of the process did not make it possible. Neph very quickly became a big part of our community when he joined us five years ago. From keeping our school safe and clean, to jumping on stage with staff during our Variety Show performance, to playing basketball with kids, he has shown up for his Morse family and we appreciate him so much. While this is a huge loss for us, it is an important opportunity for Neph and we wish him success in his new position.
Drum Call
The next workshop is Saturday, April 27th, at 4:30PM in the Morse School Gym. Learn more and register at www.drumcallcps.com. Morse School families and staff asked for more opportunities to learn West African dance and enjoy the live drumming, and we listened! Thank you to Friends of Morse for helping make this third workshop possible.
