The 5th graders recently completed an exciting self portrait project.

First, they looked at presidential portraits from the National Portrait Gallery and then recreated the paintings in photograph form.

Next, students focused on the newest entry to the Presidential Gallery, Kehinde Wiley's portrait of former President Obama. Kehinde Wiley is known for recreating old master European paintings with current, diverse models.

Students created a floral background for their self portraits through the technique of reduction linoleum printmaking. They carved blocks of linoleum and printed with two colors.

Finally, the students had to consider what kind of president they would be. And what kind of artist they would commission to create a portrait for them!

These self portraits will be on display at our Morse School Art Show this coming spring!
