Message from Principal Leith: August 2018

Dear members of the Morse School community,

It gives me great pleasure to introduce myself and share with you how thrilled I am to to begin the 2018-2019 school year as your new principal! I grew up less than a mile from the Morse School and the early and positive experiences I had growing up in Cambridge have shaped many of the choices I have made throughout my life. I attended the Cambridge Public Schools and graduated from CRLS before going on to earn my B.A. from Harvard, my Ed.M. in teaching from Boston University, and my Ed.D. in Culture, Communities, and Education from the Harvard Graduate School of Education. My professional roles have included two years as a Peace Corps volunteer in Cape Verde, twelve years working in the Boston Public Schools, three years serving as an assistant professor at Salem State University and three years as principal of the Horace Mann Laboratory School in Salem.

These experiences – and the perspectives I have gained as the parent of two school-aged children (both enrolled in the Cambridge Public Schools) – have led me to believe that all children can succeed when they attend nurturing and culturally responsive schools in which teachers work together, engage children in rigorous, joyful and appropriately-differentiated learning experiences, and establish positive relationships with families and community partners.

In the months since my appointment as your new principal I have come to understand that the Morse School is home to many outstanding faculty and staff, committed families, and curious and energetic students. It is an honor to become a member of this vibrant school community and the principal of a school that has enjoyed so many years of steady and thoughtful leadership. I am grateful to have had the opportunity to coordinate closely with retiring principal Pat Beggy and returning assistant principal Samantha Headley to ensure that everything is in place for a smooth transition and a successful start to the school year.

One of my primary goals for the coming year will be to work with you to build upon our school’s accomplishments. In order to make an effective contribution to the work already taking place at the Morse School, it will be important for me to understand what is working well and what we might work together to improve. In order to be transparent about my entry into the principalship, I have developed the following Entry Plan, which outlines the specific steps I plan to take to learn more about the Morse School:

If you have questions about my Entry Plan or suggestions for additional ways in which I might learn about our school, please do not hesitate to contact me via e-mail ([email protected]). Please also consider sharing your ideas about our school by taking a brief online questionnaire. I am eager to learn about your hopes and thoughts about how can work together to achieve our collective goals.

I am very excited about the coming school year and I can’t wait to welcome you back in person. By collaborating with one another, engaging in open dialogue and building trust, I am certain that the Morse School will continue to be an amazing place to learn and teach!

Sincerely,

Chad Leith
