Message from Samantha Headley: February 14, 2025

Dear Morse School Community,

It has been a fun-filled week of learning at Morse! Last Friday night we enjoyed our annual Paint Night, Wednesday we had our 5th Grade Poetry Show, Thursday, 4th Graders had a Celebration of Learning to showcase the Eureka! CKLA unit and we are celebrating friendships today for Valentine's Day.

Staff Professional Development

On Wednesday, our staff participated in the first of three professional development sessions on Executive Function with consultant Alexis Reid. Our first session was dedicated to understanding Executive Function which is the brain's ability to coordinate the cognitive and psychological processes needed to initiate, sustain, monitor and adapt the behaviors and attitudes to achieve a goal. Next, we will move into strategies and ways to support our students. Looking for ways to help your child organize themselves at home? Be on the lookout for a Caregiver Workshop on Executive Function to be held on May 8th from 6-7PM at Morse! More information to come soon.

Poetry Show

5th graders at the Morse School just put on their first (hopefully annual) Poetry Show. With 20 poems performed by students and 15 teachers sharing beloved poems, the show was a smashing success! In the weeks leading up to the Poetry Show, 5th graders engaged in a series of poetry lessons during their Integrated Library & Technology block.  These lessons taught students to understand how to break up their poems, articulate, speak with proper rate and voice level, and incorporate dramatization in order to bring poetry to life.

Morse Start/End Time Survey - Family Action Needed

I hope you all saw Interim Superintendent Murphy's Parent Square message on 2/12. He is soliciting your feedback on the potential change in the Morse School's start and end time next year. Right now, there are three different start times for elementary schools across the district and we are in the middle tier start time. This has had an impact on bus transportation and ensuring that our students arrive in a timely manner to school. The district is exploring adjusting the start and end time of our school in order to help students get to school on time. He is reaching out to all of you to share your feedback.

Please take the survey by clicking on this link.

Coming Soon...Read Across America Week

The week of March 3rd-7th is Read Across America Week and the theme is Let’s Create & Celebrate A Nation Of Diverse Readers. We are excited to celebrate this week with book recommendations, trivia and silly bookmarks. Students will also take part in a book swap during their weekly library time. Wednesday, March 5th, students and staff are encouraged to wear cozy clothes and we will drop everything and read for 15 minutes as a whole school (D.E.A.R. time!). Additionally, there will be a special video shared during our weekly Friday Live Stream featuring our own diverse readers that will be shared with families in Ms. Headley's Friday Newsletter. The library welcomes donations of gently used books for our book swap. Email Ms. Pennell for more information.
