Trees in the Art Studio!

Many grades have been focusing on trees in their artwork the past few weeks. Here's a look at the creativity that's been happening:

Junior K

Students created tree paintings featuring the letters of their names. They read Chicka Chicka Boom Boom, Sky Tree, and The Alphabet Tree. The backgrounds were painted with watercolors, the trees with tempera paint, and the leaves were great practice to write and rewrite the letters of their names!

Kindergarten

Students learned about the abstract work of Piet Mondrian, as well as primary colors. They began with painting trees of their imagination, using only red, yellow, and blue. As scientists, they had to discover what happened when those primary colors mixed together. Next, students looked at how Piet Mondrian's abstract paintings were originally inspired by his early tree paintings. They practiced cutting wavy and zig zag lines for the trunk and branches. Students used watercolor pencils to color the primary colored blocks between the branches.

4th Grade

Students created symbolic family trees. After looking at "trees of life" from various cultures (ancient Egypt, Mexico, and Celtic Irish), students painted trees in the style of Gustav Klimt's Tree of Life. They depicted each family member as a symbol, rather than a word or portrait. Symbols were chosen based on a family member's job, hobby, culture, name, or favorites.
