House for the Hermit CrabDon't forget your goggles when you come to D6-Kindergarten, you'll need them as you explore the undersea adventures of Hermit Crab as he finds other creatures to decorate his Sea Shell home.

First; We read A House For Hermit Crab by Eric Carle

The Dedication page reads;
" Hermit Crabs live on the Ocean floor,
Their skin is hard, except for the abdomen which is soft.
To protect this "soft spot" the hermit crab borrows a shell and makes it
his/her house."
Then, only its face, feet and claws stick out from the shell.
That way, it can see, walk and catch its food.
When a Hermit crab is threatened, it withdraws into its shell until the
danger has passed."

The students worked in small groups, using various media to create each part of the undersea scape.

We have a real Hermit Crab that visits us for two days a week so we can learn to be kind to animals and care for them.

The students will be observing our Hermit Crab friend.
We will learn about the Hermit Crab "Habitat"
Students will observe the Hermit Crab;
What color is the Crab body?
How does it move? sideways, forward, backwards?
What does it like to eat?
Do Hermit crabs make any sounds?
Which shell will it choose next when it gets too big for its shell?

Other books by Eric Carle that we have read this month during our Author Study;

The Artist Who Painted a Blue Horse
The Very Grouchy Ladybug
The Very Hungry Caterpillar
Tell Time with The Very Busy Spider
