Dear Morse School Community,
I must start by thanking Friends of the Morse School for organizing an amazing International Festival and Potluck. Thank you to the many families who shared their cultures, food, traditions and dress. This was truly a beautiful night of community, sharing and laughter. A special thank you to parents Hannah Hinzman and Brianna Ali for coordinating this event with so much thought and care.
Live Stream
On today's Live Stream, we highlighted Native American Heritage Month and shared how 3 of our students: Maddie, Eleanor, and Naomi Taylor recently lived and went to school on The White Mountain Apache Tribe Reservation in Arizona. They got to learn from and with this community. We discussed the many different Native American groups across the United States, each with different languages, cultures, and traditions. Explaining that these indigenous groups lived here long before this land became the United States. The indigenous people have been treated unfairly over the last several hundred years, yet they wrote Thanksgiving Address: Greetings to the Natural World. Ms. Pennell was fortunate enough to find a beautifully illustrated book that compliments their words: "Giving Thanks - A Native American Good Morning Message". The book is introduced by the mother of Maddie, Eleanor, and Naomi and read aloud by many of our very own Morse students. You can hear the story with this link.
Morse Stealth Staff Spirit Week
This week the staff carried out a secret spirit week that kept the kids guessing what our theme was on each day! Monday we all wore Black in full stealth gear! On Tuesday, it was Anything But a Cup Day and we all drank from some pretty funny objects! On Wednesday we wore our favorite musician/band shirt and on Thursday we wore a student favorite - socks and sandals. Today, we showcased our favorite hat! It was fun to have the kids wondering what was going on! We are looking forward to our Student Council designed whole school spirit week. The council is thinking of some interesting themes!
Author Visit
Yesterday our 4th and 5th graders enjoyed a visit from author and illustrator Ruth Chan. She has a new graphic novel memoir that just came out titled Uprooted which tells the story of moving from her hometown of Toronto to Hong Kong. Please ask your child about it!
Reporting Periods
The district is doing a review of report cards and determining how often families should receive one in the school year. Your feedback is essential in helping us understand how to best provide information about your child’s academic progress. Your input will help guide the work on CPS Report Cards, this year and beyond. Here is the link: Elementary Report Card Feedback Form. The survey will close on Saturday, November 30, 2024.
Upcoming Events
Have a wonderful weekend.
Sincerely,
Samantha Headley
