Message from Principal Leith: September 14, 2018

Dear Morse School parents and families,

It has been another great week at the Morse School! Our hallway bulletin boards are already beginning to fill up with student writing and artwork as our teachers continue to foster a sense of community and belonging in their classrooms. Despite the overcast weather, we’ve also been able to get our children out for recess every day! In this week’s newsletter, I’d like to share information about some upcoming events and opportunities for parents and caregivers to connect with our school:

Save the Date! 9/26 Morse School Open House & Curriculum Night
This year’s Morse School Open House & Curriculum Night will take place on Wednesday, September 26th from 6 to 8PM. We invite all of our parents and caregivers (JK-Grade 5) to come meet your children’s teachers, connect with other parents, and gain an understanding of what our students will be learning – and how they will be learning – during the coming school year.
Please read here for more information about the format of this year’s open house >>

In order to make the most of this open house format, we recommend that you attend the open house without your children, if possible. However, we will provide limited childcare coverage for those parents/guardians who cannot make other arrangements and would otherwise be unable to attend.

Looking for Parent Representatives for the Morse School Council
As I mentioned in the message I sent last week, we are looking for parent representatives on the Morse School Council. The School Council is a legally-required, representative group of parents and teachers who assist the principal in:

  1. Adopting educational goals for the school;
  2. Identifying the educational needs of students attending the school;
  3. Reviewing the annual school building budget; and
  4. Formulating a school improvement plan.

The School Council will hold its first meeting in October (at a day and time to be determined by the elected parent and teacher representatives). The School Council will also schedule meetings for January and May (with any additional meetings being scheduled on an “as needed” basis).

We are looking to have 3-5 elected parent representatives on the 2018-2019 school council. Being a Morse School parent is the only qualification you need to run for a School Council seat! We celebrate diversity at the Morse School and are eager to identify a group of parent members who represent the diverse backgrounds and experiences of our school community. If you are interested in running for a seat on the council, please send an email to me with the following information:

  • Your name and the grade level of your child(ren);
  • Why you are interested in joining the School Council; and
  • A little bit about your background.

Voting will take place through paper ballot at the September 26th Curriculum Night/Open House (each Morse School parent/guardian is eligible to vote).

Please remember that there are many other ways to participate in parent decision-making at the Morse School. If you are not interested in running for School Council but still wish to get involved, please consider attending our monthlyFriends of Morse meetings. I will be attending the Friends of Morse meetings regularly and hope to see many of you there as well! The next Friends of Morse meeting will take place on Tuesday, October 9th!

Find more information about getting involved >>

Thank you and very best wishes for a wonderful weekend!
